A Report from the United Kingdom Constitution Monitoring Group, covering 5 July to 31 December, 2024
The preceding six issues of the Constitution in Review published by the UKCMG covered the period from the commencement of the 2019 Parliament to the election of Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister on 5 July 2024. These six issues may be considered ‘volume one’ of the Constitution in Review series.
This edition of the Constitution in Review, the first issue of our second volume, covers the first six months of the new Labour government, spanning 5 July 2024 to 31 December 2024. The report period saw the first steps of a new government which had been elected upon an explicit promise, among others, to improve standards in government and in public life more generally. Labour’s election manifesto, discussed throughout this report, made a number of commitments to attempt to arrest and reverse the decline in public trust in government. This is an admirable aim, and while there have been some positive developments, cause for concern remains.
