Job details

The Constitution Society is an independent, non-party educational foundation that works to promote informed debate about constitutional reform.

The Society publishes papers, a regular blog and other media content on constitutional topics by leading experts. It also conducts its own research programmes, supports affiliated organisations, and organises conferences, seminars, and lectures.

The Society is looking to recruit contributing writers in fixed-term appointments to research, write, and create content on contemporary UK constitutional issues. Areas of interest to the Society include, but are not limited to:

  • Devolution and the territorial constitution
  • The judiciary and the rule of law
  • Executive standards and accountability
  • The role of the civil service and the structure of government
  • Legislative issues
  • Democracy and electoral systems
  • The constitutional change process

From 2025 contributing writers will be encouraged to explore a range of media forms in addition to traditional blogs, such as video essays, podcasts, or infographics. Each writer will be offered a minimum of five assignments in 2024/25, with blogs typically between 1,000 and 1,500 words. Writers will be paid £200 per blog or equivalent content.

Contributing writers are expected to attend the occasional CS event in London while in post: travelling expenses will be reimbursed.

Person specification

The successful candidate will have:

  • A strong academic background, preferably to master’s level or beyond, in Political Science, Law, History, or a related discipline. Multi-disciplinary experience is an advantage.
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to produce clear and engaging English accessible to politicians, public officials, and academics alike.
  • Experience in creating content for different media forms.
  • A self-motivated and organised approach, with confidence in working to deadlines.
  • An interest in engaging with the wider community through events and discussions.

Application details

Candidates are asked to submit:

  • A writing sample, ideally a blog or equivalent content on a constitutional issue, or other appropriate media.
  • A list of five possible blogs or other media content focused on UK constitutional topics.
  • A CV.

These must be combined into a single document and attached in either Word or PDF format and emailed to info@constitutionsoc.org.uk by the closing date.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview.

Closing date: 16 February 2025

Start date: Interviews to be held week commencing 17 February via Zoom. Start date at the end of February.
