The Constitution Society is delighted to announce it has appointed a new Communications Manager and Researcher and three new Research Fellows.
Dexter Govan joins the core team as the Society’s new Communications Manager and Researcher from the University of Edinburgh. Dexter recently completed his doctoral thesis and worked previously as a Press Officer for the Scottish Labour Party at Holyrood. He is a published writer on unionism in Britain and Ireland.
The Constitution Society’s new Research Fellows will each complete a project on a contemporary constitutional issue. Working across a range of fields, they bring considerable academic and practical experience to their projects and will make timely interventions into UK political debate about the constitution.
Tabitha Troughton is completing a PhD at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research will examine the UK parliamentary system, considering its historical development and its implications for democracy in the present.
Dr John Ault is the Director of Democracy Volunteers, the leading UK election observation group, and holds a PhD from the University of Exeter. Dr Ault’s project will consider the Elections Act 2022 and the introduction of voter ID in Great Britain, from an administrative perspective, ahead of the 2023 English local elections.
Joanna George is a Research Associate specialising in public law at the University of Cambridge and a steering committee member of the Constitution Reform Group which proposes a new Act of Union Bill. Her writing has appeared in The Times and British Vogue among other publications, and she has recently co-authored a forthcoming chapter on The European Union and the British Constitution with Baroness Stuart of Edgbaston. Her paper with The Constitution Society will interrogate how ‘modern’ the government’s proposed Modern Bill of Rights actually is and will evaluate whether it can meet current and potential constitutional challenges.
